I would like to be able to get my attachments included in backups when they are created.

The interesting thing with files is that they are always a URL. So you could download these files, but you would also have to change the card contents if you want the card to point to the local copy of the file.
because it’s not possible to point the urls to local files reliably, and because those urls aren’t likely going anywhere, I’d lean to keeping the card contents as is. And just including copies of the files in the zip
